Back in the saddle. It’s been a few days. I get rusty when I don’t write. I’ve been consumed with with researching for an article I want to write. It’s about making Green choices in the beauty industry; hair salons the focus.
Last night I was out with another hairstylist/friend, and I realized through talking with her, that I am passionate about this topic. And, in my research so far, there is not a lot of information available. In other words, I don’t think being Green has really hit hair salons yet.
So, I have a request. If any salons, or stylists have decided to go Green, please contact me, and let me know what you are doing in the salon to help the environment. I will be submitting the article to various magazines.
Thanks.

i think the cost of adapting greener standards is one the salon owner is slow to take on.
unfortunately there have not been any studies that truely show the affects chemicals have on hair stylists.
the same goes for beauty products. it would take down empires to truely expose the hazards. thanks god for the comsmetic database. someone is finally exposing the truth.
i have contacted the epa, and they are supoosedly going to do some research soon. you can find alot of information in Europe.

Thank you for your response.
In my experience, salons rarely have enough ventilation, which would help with the odors from the chemicals we use, whether it’s hair color, straighteners, perms, or hair spray. Green plants would help for instance.
I’m not particularly interested in exposing anybody. I’m interested in educating myself, and others about the choices we have to make our own environments more supportive of our health. And, if more salons made even a few changes, this would be the beginning of a movement.

I think in a fashion forward trendsetting industry Going green is the next step. Yes right now it seems like a phase but the reality is going green is a cause. Like any cause we beleive in we fight for it. What are we waiting for? Save yourself and the people around you.

There is not enough information out there with tips to go green. We are currently donating our clients hair clippings to a non-profit called matter of trust, that uses the hair clippings to make hair mats that are used to absorb oil spills around the world. We recycle everything we can and we carry organic and green products. We would love to do more as we learn about more we can do!

i am going to be opening a salon in the very near future. its already purchased and is currently a functioning salon. i want to make it as green as possible within my budget which is limited. right now i am trying out diffrent “organic” hair color. none of which is actually organic, but i am trying to weed through to find the best.

I’m trying to figure out ways to go green as much as I can. Its important to get our whole team involved and get our clients excited about it. Do you recommend anything for serving coffee, we do not have a dish washer and washing as many coffee cups as we go through is not an option, we would have to hire a seperate person just to wash cups. Any ideas? Please email me and let me know.

I think it is great to start with as much as possible to be a green hairsalon, just change of product sizes , vegan haircare and motivate customers to come with public transportation, there is so much to do.
but what i really wanna know, is there any alternative to foils???
there is so much waste and i havent heart from any alrernative,
please, if someone know, let me know , and which solar energies posibillitys do hairsalons have?

We are using herbal hair coloring, no toxin’s. We are also using herbal hair shampoos and condtioners. We are using chemical free cleaners for our salon also.
We are interested in finding out more things we can do around our Salon for our client’s and our health.

I am doing some research now and would like to start by saying that I am very happy I came across this link. I will be launching a company in June that I have been working on for the last 4 months. Our company will do its best to create a triple win solution-the consumer benefits, the salons and spas will benefit and most importantly, the planet will benefit. We are a network of green-minded salons and spas empowered by individuals, corporations and various other stakeholders coming together. What is surprising but very impressive is the fact that in this short time, I have been able to garner the support of over a hundred or so salons and spas throughout the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). There is overwhelming support for positive green change in the salon industry, that is encouraging, indeed. It seems to be all about providing consumers with choice. We are doing our due diligence and will be able to offer a constructive platform for the creation of more sustainable solutions once we launch. Please feel free to contact me and I will let you all know once we go live with the company in June of 2009.
Thanks..

I am opening a salon and the building is green. I am having a hard time finding color, perms, and sanitizer that are considered green. How do you know if the product is green? What determines that it is green?
Would love as much info as i can get

I just found this thread, so I am so sorry I am late in responding.
My business E.C.O.-Environmentally Concerned Organizations can help salons go green and lower their bottom line costs.
Check out my website, then send me an email if you are interested.

I’m not sure if any of you have heard of Aveda but it is all about “green”. Permanent hair color – 97% naturally derived, demi – 99% naturally derived. Everything is from plants or flowers. All of the products come in containers that can be recycled. If you’re looking to go green but aren’t sure how, I would say the first step is to look into Aveda. If you want any more information about Aveda, you can e-mail me or just look up http://www.aveda.com
